Medical Marijuana Easily Recommended for Several Conditions « The …

Jill Brown

Goleta and Santa Barbara are packed with young adult college students. There is probably no better place to light up a joint of marijuana for the first time than at the “Marley house” in the Goleta college community, Isla Vista.

Lately, however, young adults have increasingly begun taking hits of marijuana for medical reasons instead of for recreational reasons.

“I stumbled upon it [marijuana] in high school and realized that it helped me calm down and help my anxiety,” said Carrie Ryan, a third-year student at the University of California Santa Barbara who preferred not to use her real name. “Now it helps me calm down and relax a little.”

Ryan, who suffers from generalized anxiety disorder, is a member of the growing number of recreational-turned-medical marijuana users. She carries a California medical marijuana card that allows her to purchase medical marijuana in legal dispensaries.

It is easier now more than ever to acquire a medical marijuana card in California. Many general physicians are certified to recommend the drug across the state for a variety of medical conditions. Doctors are not currently allowed to prescribe marijuana to patients because it is still listed as a Schedule 1 drug, a classification that states that marijuana has no medical value. Although it is not yet permissible for doctors to prescribe marijuana, official state legalization is not necessary to obtain marijuana legally: marijuana is essentially legal already.

Certified California doctors are increasingly willing to recommend marijuana to young adults because marijuana is less likely to cause addiction than other prescription drugs. The changing attitude regarding marijuana in the medical field is slowly shaping state legislation, which could fully legalize marijuana in the next few years. Additionally, the negative side effects of marijuana are less severe than those of other FDA approved antidepressants and painkillers.

Ryan has firsthand knowledge of severe and negative side effects of several prescription medications. Several of her family members had suffered varying health issues from prescribed Prozac that Ryan wanted to avoid. She also knew someone who overdosed on Xanax and died. Ryan had additionally been prescribed Valium to decrease her anxiety, but she didn’t feel like herself when she took the powerful anti-anxiety medication.

For Ryan the decision to request medical marijuana was simple: marijuana is the most natural and low-risk treatment for her anxiety. And getting a card is no more difficult than getting any other anti-anxiety prescription.

“It’s really easy to get a card,” Ryan said. “You get an appointment with a doctor and they weigh you and test your lungs, listen to your heartbeat, and ask a few questions about why you want to get a card, and if you’re healthy enough to actually smoke.”

Ryan also said that the doctor she saw never asked to see previous evidence of her psychological or psychiatric history.

“He just kind of took my word for it,” she said.

Not all doctors certified to recommend marijuana to patients dole out marijuana recommendations as easily. Others conduct more thorough qualification tests by requiring physical exams and copies of medical records.

James Kane, a UCSB fourth year who preferred not to use his real name, said that his exam was thorough and that it was like any routine physical examination with some added questions regarding his specific health condition and past marijuana use. He was able to obtain a recommendation for chronic back pain that he experiences due to an old snowboarding injury in which he fractured several vertebrae.

“When he [the doctor] did the evaluation of me, he checked out my body a little bit, and he asked me to rate my pain on a scale of one to 10 on how bad my back bothers me,” Kane said. “And then he asked me to rate my pain after taking a hit of weed to see how it decreased my pain and he also did a couple of tests on me…[to test] my range of motion.”

Medical marijuana was ideal for Kane because his previous painkiller, Norco, caused constipation, a loss of appetite, and fatigue. Norco also made Kane feel “more out of it,” as if he were outside of his body watching himself operate.

Kane’s exam was notably more thorough than Ryan’s, but as long as a patient is able to prove that he experiences pain, certified doctors seem to have no problem issuing recommendations.

The main controversy surrounding medical marijuana recommendations is regarding how patients prove that their pain is real and not just an excuse to buy marijuana legally and for recreational use.

Stuart Light, an alcohol and drug counselor with UCSB’s Alcohol and Drug Program, said that any physical or psychological condition can be potentially difficult to diagnose in general, particularly when a patient is seeking a specific type of medication.

Even though there is no way to ensure that a patient’s pain is real, many specially certified California doctors like Ryan’s are as comfortable recommending medical marijuana as they are prescribing antidepressants, if not more so.

Light said that such a progressive attitude is becoming more prevalent in the medical field.

“I think it’s going to get to the point where you will be able to get it just as if you went in and got a prescription for any other kind of drug,” he said. “About five years down the road marijuana is basically going to be legalized.”

Recent efforts by the California state legislature to get a medical marijuana measure on November’s ballot support legalization for patients claiming medical need. Government initiatives to legalize the drug serve to legitimize the Compassionate Use Act of 1996, which protects users from criminal laws if they are using marijuana to treat medical conditions.

“It’s getting down to the point with this whole issue of legalization that they’re [the California state government] starting to look at marijuana as much as a medication as an illicit drug,” Light said.

Light additionally said that because the risk of addiction and serious withdrawal symptoms is lower with marijuana than with other painkillers and antidepressants, many doctors recommend it comfortably instead.

“I’ve never really felt dependent on it [marijuana],” Ryan said. “I’ll go a couple of days without smoking and it won’t really affect me. I’m still just as functional on it or off.”

Understanding Medical Relationships through a Covenantal Ethical Perspective

by James J. Rusthoven
Relationships between different parties form the core of medical practice. Increasing attention has focused on the possible merits of understanding such relationships as covenantal in nature. Some advocates of a covenant ethic have focused on promise and fidelity as the defining features of this relationship. However, historical and/or metaphysical justification for prescribing a covenantal model varies, with some appealing to the ancient Greek medical tradition while others claim authority in the biblical revelation of covenant initially established by God with humankind.

In contemporary medicine, reliance on rational identification of a common morality without appeal to transcendent authority has become a dominant paradigm of medical ethics. The basis for envisioning a biblical covenant ethic for clinical relationships has a firm foundation in Reformed theology, which has developed the concept of covenant as a central theme. Such an ethic provides a transcendent grounding that is absent from a common morality based on reason alone that dominates much of bioethical thought. The patient-supporter relationship is presented as an integral part of medical practice that can be understood through a biblical covenant ethic as fidelity between a person or community and the vulnerable patient, grounded in the agape love of God for humankind.

HEALTHY LIVE TIPS ROOMS: 15 Medical Tests Every Woman Should Have

Medical screening tests are a great way to stay on top of your health. to help make it simple, there is a list of the most important medical tests every woman should have — along with what age to start and how often to repeat. Here’s to routine maintenance for your health.

Cholesterol screening/lipid profile
Cholesterol is a type of fatty protein in your blood that can build up in your arteries, so knowing how much cholesterol is present is a good predictor of your risk for heart disease. There are two kinds of cholesterol: HDL, or high-density lipoproteins, and LDL, or low-density lipoproteins. And women need to pay close attention to cholesterol levels, because they tend to rise after menopause. If you were already high or borderline before or at menopause, there’s cause for concern. These test a good for you every five years. If testing reveals your levels are high, your doctor will recommend retesting every six months to one year.

Blood pressure check
It seems simple, but checking your blood pressure regularly is one of the most important things you can do to protect your health, present and future. when your blood pressure readings are higher than the cutoff of 140/90, it puts stress on your heart, leaving you at risk for heart attack and stroke. many experts believe 120/80 is a healthier target to shoot for. once a year if readings are normal; your doctor will recommend every six months if readings are high or if you’re taking medication to control hypertension.

Diabetes screening
Doctors check your tolerance for glucose absorption, which means how readily your body digests sugar. Diabetes puts a unique burden on women. many women get diabetes while pregnant, and it’s dangerous for both mother and baby. it is good for you to get diabetes screening every tree years.

Bone density test
It is good for you to get bone density test every five years. Osteoporosis happens when minerals such as calcium begin to leach from bones, thinning and weakening them. in women, this often happens as a result of low estrogen levels after menopause. a specialized X-ray called a DXA (dual-energy X-ray) will screens your spine, hips, and wrists.

Vitamin D test
Recently, doctors have realized that vitamin D is a key nutrient that helps maintain strong bones and protect against cancer and infection. this is important because women are at such high risk for osteoporosis; 80 percent of those with bone loss are women. You want your reading to be between 30 and 80 nanograms per milliliter; some experts advocate 50 as the lower limit.

Colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy
Colorectal cancer, which is cancer of the lower part of the intestines, is curable in 90 percent of all cases — as long as it’s caught early. And screening tests that look inside the colon, called colonoscopy and flexible sigmoidoscopy, are the secret to catching it early. many people mistakenly think of colon cancer as a man’s disease, although it strikes women equally with men. Flexible sigmoidoscopies should be repeated every five years, and a colonoscopy should be repeated every ten years.

Fecal occult blood test (FOBT)
Although it sounds otherworldly, the word occult simply refers to the fact that this test checks for blood in the stool that’s not visible to the eye. this test is considered key to catching colon cancer early; currently more women than men are diagnosed with colon cancer that’s already at an advanced stage. an FOBT is used to check for intestinal conditions such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

Skin cancer screening
Younger women in particular need to be educated about skin cancer; many women mistakenly believe men are more likely to get skin cancer, but the rise in popularity of tanning beds and some outdoor activities has caused skin cancer rates to rise among younger women. The number of women under age 40 with basal cell carcinoma, one type of skin cancer, has more than doubled in the last 30 years and women under 39 are almost twice as likely to develop melanoma as men. Experts recommend conducting a personal “mole check” once a month in the shower to look for unusual growths or changes to existing moles.

Eye exam and vision screening
Whether you have problems seeing at a distance or close up, you need regular eye exams as you age to check the overall health of your eyes. Women are at a slightly higher risk of developing age-related macular degeneration, one of the most common eye health problems. every one to three years between the ages of 18 and 61, it’s good for your health; after that, as often as your doctor thinks is necessary depending on what’s happening with your vision.

Hearing test (audiogram)
Fourteen percent of adults between ages 45 and 64 have hearing loss, and by the age of 60, one in three adults is losing hearing. Yet many people go years before getting tested, primarily because hearing tests are voluntary. although men are more likely to develop hearing loss in general, certain conditions that are more common to women, such as lupus and other autoimmune diseases raise the risk of hearing loss.

Thyroid test
The thyroid, a small gland in your neck, regulates your body’s metabolic rate. Women are at higher risk for most types of thyroid disease, probably because of hormonal factors. If your thyroid is overactive, a condition known as hyperthyroidism, your metabolic rate is too high. Symptoms include insomnia, weight loss, and overactive pulse. If you’re hypothyroid, it means your thyroid is underactive and your metabolism will be slow and sluggish. this usually leads to fatigue, constipation, and weight gain. It’s recommends a thyroid test every three to five years after the age of 35.

Screening for metabolic syndrome
Metabolic syndrome is a group of symptoms that put you at increased risk for both diabetes and heart disease. The screening involves checking for a list of issues and, if they’re present, recommending additional tests. It’s good for you every three to five years, along with cholesterol and diabetes screening.

Pelvic exam and pap smear
Although many younger women are now being vaccinated against the HPV strain that causes cervical cancer, women who were past the age of 26 when the vaccine was introduced still need to be alert for this deadly form of cancer. Sadly, cervical cancer remains the second leading cause of death from cancer for women worldwide, and the familiar pap smear remains the preventive screening test of choice. It’s recommended to take a test every year, although some doctors will allow you to go two to three years between exams if all your results have been normal.

Physical breast exam
Checking your breasts for lumps, thickening, skin changes, and nipple discharge is the best way to be vigilant about preventing breast cancer. You can do this exam at home in the shower, but doctors also recommend having breast checks performed by an expert as well. Experts recommend home breast exams once a month; it’s usually best to do them just after your period ends, when breasts aren’t as tender or sore.

Mammogram
Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women, and the mammogram remains the most basic tool used to screen for tumors, aside from physical examination of the breasts. every year, disregard recent controversy over mammogram frequency until final recommendations are issued.care2

The Dubai Mall Medical Centre strengthens portfolio with Complementary and Alternative Medicine Department

 • United Arab Emirates: 3 hours, 37 minutes ago

The Dubai Mall Medical Centre, the flagship healthcare centre of the Emaar Healthcare Group and Methodist International partnership, has strengthened its portfolio of healthcare services with the opening of the Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) Department.

Focused on the holistic wellness of visitors in addition to offering specialised services that meet modern lifestyle requirements, the CAM Department is headed by Dr Heather Eade, Naturopathic Medicine Practitioner, with extensive experience working in Canada and Saudi Arabia previously.
The CAM Department at The Dubai Mall Medical Centre offers a spectrum of treatment options that address specific patient profiles in addition to supporting the other departments by providing valuable lifestyle recommendations for patients. A variety of conditions can be addressed by the department including gastro-intestinal problems, skin conditions, reproductive concerns, hormonal abnormalities, as well as lifestyle issues like smoking cessation, weight loss, and stress management.
Mr Omar Al Shunnar, Chief Executive Officer, Emaar Healthcare Group, said, “A recent healthcare survey in the UAE reports that nearly a third of the Emirati population is obese and that one in every four Nationals is diabetic. This is an indication of the need for modifying lifestyles, in which complementary & alternative medicine can play a pivotal role.”
He added, “The opening of the CAM departments underlines our commitment to offer holistic treatment options for visitors, and underscores how we are leading the way in integrated medical care for the community. By integrating wellness treatments with modern treatments, patients benefit from an overall lifestyle modification that adds to their well-being.”
“While antibiotics have saved millions of lives, there has been a real shift in the way people think about their health,” said Dr. Sarper Tanli, Executive Director for Methodist International. “Many people are attracted to complementary alternative medicine, as it emphasizes on treating the whole person – body, mind and spirit. Some physicians have started to use CAM as a part of support to their conventional medicine practice. A combination of complementary and conventional medicine integrates the solutions for people’s well-being and patients find the individualized and collaborative approach of medicine particularly appealing.”
Dr Eade added, “Complementary & Alternative Medicine is gaining acceptance as a healthcare priority by healthcare organisations globally. CAM treatments are focused on preventative as well as corrective options, in tune with the individual needs of each patient. The value of CAM therapies, when integrated in a modern treatment centre, is immense as the focus is on healthcare options that promote and support the body’s natural healing processes.”
Dr Eade’s scope of practice as a Naturopathic Medicine Practitioner includes clinical nutrition, homeopathy, herbal medicine, acupuncture, and physical medicine. Further certifications in colon hydrotherapy, cranio-sacral therapy, intravenous, and chelation therapy leave Dr. Eade well positioned to offer comprehensive CAM treatment protocols for a variety of medical conditions. In addition, the department offers food and environmental sensitivity screening.
Dr Eade completed her BSc (Honors) in Life Sciences at Queen’s University in Canada in 1999, and her four-year doctorate degree in naturopathic medicine at the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine in Vancouver, Canada in 2005, where she earned the prestigious John Cosgrove Award for Excellence in Clinical Skills.
Previously she managed the Complementary and Alternative Medicine department in a private hospital in Saudi Arabia, and has experience treating patients of all ages. She has a particular interest in helping her patients achieve their health and wellness goals through truly individualized and integrated care.

Conveniently located within The Dubai Mall, the 60,000 sq ft premium multi-speciality medical centre is focused on offering an integrated healthcare experience, and is the largest out-patient facility in the region. The focus of the medical centre is to drive Emaar Healthcare Group’s goal of creating holistic healthcare systems that are aligned with the needs of the community.
